The Famous Marmite Savoury Cake or loaf

Preheat the oven to 180ºC.

Mix flour and baking powder together. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add the grated cheese.

Lightly fry the bacon in the oil.

Remove with a slotted spoon and then fry the onion in the same pan.

Beat eggs and milk together. Mix into the dry ingredients.

Add the fried bacon and onion.

Spoon mixture into a greased square pan or 4 mini loaf pans.

Bake for 15-25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.

Mix the Marmite and butter together to a spread.

Spread this mixture over the warm cake or mini loaves, or serve separately as a spread. Slice and serve hot.

Makes 1 large square or 4 mini loaves

500ml Sasko cake flour

10ml Moir’s Baking Powder

125g soft butter

250ml grated Cheddar cheese

10ml oil

125g chopped bacon (optional)

1 grated onion, finely chopped

100ml milk

2 eggs, beaten

15ml Marmite

30g soft butter

For a vegetarian option, leave out the bacon
